Because It is Cold Today

Considering Jara is already asking when we can go to the lake again.  Here are a few pictures to remind us of how much we actually like the winter and that at one point we were so hot and desperate we thought it would be a good idea to swim in the reservoir. Ick.
Elise likes splashing

Jara likes the safety Jed provides from the elusive croc

Jack likes to demonstrate his croc hunter face

Happy Winter All!

Birthday Jack

Three is a year of highs and lows, still a little one, becoming a big one.  I often think of Jack and Jara being the same age.  Jack does whatever Jara does.  If Jara gains new independence or does something for the first time Jack is right behind her.  Many privileges Jack enjoys would never have been given to Jara at three, but he isn't coddled as much either.  The joy and curse of being the second child, I suppose.

Jack's 3 Year Milestones
-Preschool: this kid is going to be a champ at preschool, he'll have gone for 3 years before he actually goes to kindergarten.  He needs an outlet.  He is very social and does not like playing alone.  Jara being gone half a day is torture.
-Lots o' learning: he went from knowing a few letters of the alphabet to knowing all letters, most sounds and reading sight words.  He likes to learn and is easy to teach.  He has a great attention span for learning.  (It's his birthday I get to brag.)
-Farewell to napping
-Water Skiing-took to it like a champ the first time, the next time he panicked.  Half way through the summer he developed fear.  Fear of movies, fear of Disneyland, fear of his room, fear of the dark, fear of everything. I know from prior experience this will gradually abate in the fourth year, so until then you won't see Jack jumping off of the roof or going to the Pioneer Theater without me.
-His first primary program, Jack joined with the other Sunbeams to sing a very stirring rendition of "The Wise Man and the Foolish man" complete with wiggly sand fingers.  Half-way through the program he got a little nervous and his teacher held him up to see us and then he was okay.  It was so sad, I could see him getting increasingly stressed by the minute.  He gets a little shy at times.  Jed had to hold me back from snatching  him off the stage and promising him a puppy.
-Riding his own 4-wheeler, fear doesn't apply here.  He has always loved being on the 4-wheeler, now he can do it on his own.  He rides responsibly.  I'm still amazed to watch him brake (he is Jed's son after all) and apply gas at the correct time.  And yes, he has a helmet.  And yes, his 4-wheeler has a kill switch and can only go a certain slow speed.
-Chores-he is an awesome laundry man.  He can fold his underwear into a mean "burrito" and is a pro at washcloths/ towels.  He straightens and then folds corner to corner.  I don't even do that!  He also picks up toys.
-He loves to read and will often sit on the couch in the dining room, while I am cleaning up the kitchen, looking at books for an hour at a time.  I will hear him "reading" sometimes and sometimes he will just look.
-His vocabulary is expanding and he quit referring to himself as me in January.  I miss "me."  The other day he asked me if the "customers in lin's would appreciate him picking up his trash" and he often refers to Elise as "a menace to society."  I don't know where he learned that one.
-His persistence is also expanding and if he doesn't get what he wants he will constantly wear you down until you are ready to give him a king size snickers bar and a 40oz juice box just to keep him quiet and keep yourself from running in front of a bus.
-He calls me "mama" it melts my heart.
-He still likes to cuddle.
-He wakes up with the birds and first things first, peeks in on me.  If I play dead he will leave me in peace for a little longer.
-He describes his bm's  "snakes" "scraggly" "ball" "angry" just a few of the more memorable/consistent names.  ewww
-He likes to use Jed's "man soap" in the shower and then show me how big and clean his muscles are.
-He can remember and tell me specific dreams, it seems as if he is also going to be genetically prone to creating blockbusters in his sleep.

My favorite thing about Jack is the fact that he is an easy-going, not overly dramatic, lovvee pet.  Easy-peasy.

Happy Birthday Jack!
FOURward on!

Conversations

Scene 1
Jed:  quite la ropa y banate!!! (take off your clothes and get in the shower !!!=NOW)
Jack:  I can't understand you! speak human!

apparently those 3 and a half years we spent going to church in Spanish didn't influence him.

Scene 2
Elise: bam, bam, bam as she screeches and slams her feet against our bedroom wall, the wall our headboard is against.
Jed: half asleep, I think we should put chicken wire around her crib
Joshlyn:  half asleep, uh huh genius

Don't call CPS yet, surprisingly we didn't happen to have any chicken wire on hand this morning.

Scene 3
Jack riding to preschool with his friend M
Jack:  M do your sisters boss you around? Cuz I have two sisters and they boss me around!
M:  No my sisters let me play in their room.
Jack: SIGH oh...

Birthday Jara

Jara is an angel.  Mostly.  Five was a good year for Jara.  Five was a turning point: the end of toddler sizes and the beginning of school.  She is marvelously independent: bathing on her own, getting in AND out of the car on her own, making her own sandwiches, bringing me breakfast, picking out outfits that match, able to determine quality books at the library, (very important for my child)  fetching bread in the store, understanding humor in movies and books, following requests/instructions.  I think she is trained.  Now, how long will it last?  Jara truly is obedient, she will do what I ask of her even if she doesn't want to.  She tries very hard to please everyone and is very self-conscious of her behavior.  If she doesn't want to put away her laundry or some other task I ask of her she will politely tell me "no thank you."  Such manners.  On her birthday she was very worried about everyone spending too much money buying her presents.   Hopefully this will be the case when she is 16 and she will be happy with her matchbox car instead of a silver convertible.

Jara's Favorites
Color-blue
Activity-drawing, coloring, painting, creating, scotch-taping, bossing Jack and playing invented games with him: school, camping, hiking in our desert, um back-yard, pioneers, mom and dad in which Jara is the "in-charge" mom and Jack has to do what she tells him to.  If only...
Animal-cats, Jara loves her stuffed kitties and our two cats daddy wishes were stuffed.
Food-mac & cheese, a kid classic, and of course it is organic mmhmm
Clothing-a threadbare, blue, get-up from a yard sale she would wear every day if I would let her.
Book-Piggie and Elephant series.  What I don't have arms!?  If you haven't read Can I Play I highly recommend it.
Movie/show-Wild Kratts
Church-Jara loves singing
Nickname for Jed-JED she still insists on calling him Jed.  She wrote a note to him that "Jed is JED." It goes over well in public.  No Jed is not just my babydaddy.
Thing to make me go bonkers-whistling, it's unfortunate she is so freekin' good at it.
Sport-cheerleading, of course, considering she is tall and can hit a ball to the moon
Friends-Abby, Jenna, Faith, Mallory, and Ella(cousin bonus)

Happy Haunted Happenings

Pumpkin carving is my favorite Halloween activity.  I have my special pumpkin-gut-scooping spoon and bone handled, dollar store carving knife.  I am not safe enough to use anything else.  Oh and my trusty sharpie.  It has multiple holiday purposes.
Elise getting in on the action.  She stole my spoon and marker, made an attempt for the knife, trailed the cat through the dirt, unrolled a costco pack of paper towels and tried to climb up my shoulder before we banished her to bed.

Jack and his pumpkin and his new camera smile.

Last year she actually carved her own jack o'lantern, this year she was content to count/sort and categorize seeds.  This was the first year she would actually clean the pumpkin.

Our finished work

I carved three and Jed carved one.  I bet you know which one Jed did.  Those are Jack's hands by the way. Jed also carved his thumb.  I knew when the hunting knife came out we were in trouble.

The J+J Party

This weekend was our annual Halloween/Birthday bash.  I like efficiency.  I like Halloween parties.  I'm too lazy to plan two parties within the same week.  And no one wants to party the day after Halloween.  More treats bleh.

Dressing up for parties is the best part.  Spidey Jack, Angelic Jara, and Evil Elise.  Jara planned her costume to properly coordinate with Elise's, and there was no confusion over who was going to be the devilish one.  Although Elise's cherubic cheeks are slightly misleading.

Aunt Ashley and her adorable peacock, Scarlet.

Along with Grandma Wheeler as the jester.  (Jed wore that same costume in middle school.)

I have the party formula down: dinner, 3 activities, cake, and presents.

Activity #1  Witch broom races.  I asked Jed what would be a good game to play and he popped this off the top of his head.  Who needs pinterest?

Activity #2 Pinata.  Always a pinata.  This year the great pumpkin Charlie Brown.  Could have fit all three kids in there.

Activity #3 Bobbing for Apples.  Classic.  So, so nasty.  Little kids spit...and snort.  My daughter was the best.  (Not at spitting, even though she's good at that too, bobbing)  I need that on a bumper sticker, "my daughter bobs for apples better than your's."

Mason was pretty good too.  He recovered from a partial drowning to chomp his apple.
The bad witch with the cake, owl cupcakes that is.  If you are scared by my make-up, don't worry, you are not the only one.  Jack wouldn't get within ten feet of me for a couple of hours.

Our spectacularly spooky family.  Do you like Jed's costume?

A lil' devil and angel picture.  I think they look alike.

And I Quote...

Jack has been perfecting his artistry through details.  His mommy now has "thunder legs."  The figure on the left is "baby mommy" and the figure on the right is "mommy all growed up with her thunder legs."  Don't think Jed didn't get a phone call at work about this one.  Upon further inquiry my literal four year old explained that "see I drew your leg and my marker went squiggly like thunder, so you have thunder legs."  There is nothing better when you are four than having the power of thunder in your legs. Got it.  Jack and Jed will live another day.
