One Year

Renn is a one-year-old!
He loves his new trike, as do I.
Bending over isn't as easy as it was with the first child and in my mid-twenties.
He opened one present by himself.  He now has a new addiction, baby cheetos.
Downed a can in one afternoon.  You know those little puffy snack things from Gerber.

His own birthday cake.
He wasn't too interested until he saw the candle, then the light shone in his eyes and he tried to extinguish the candle with his hands. eek.
No pyrotechnics that lead to the ER on your birthday baby.

Cake smash.

One taste and he was all in.
The frosting was whip cream, I think that was the clincher.

The joy of birthday cake!

It's all fun and games, until you take away the cake.

Renn tricks:
Crawling. Crawling so fast there is no interest in walking.
Bum scoot crawling, for those times when you have something in your hand and don't want to crawl on all fours.
Clapping for himself.  I love when he is proud of his accomplishments.
Shaking his head no when he knows he isn't supposed to be pulling every wipe out of the container.
Dancing.  Any music.  Even church hymns.
Making fishy noises when he wants food.
Jumping out of my arms for food.
Squirreling open containers of all kinds, including but not limited to sippy cups, puff snacks, and dishwasher detergent.
Saying mama and baba.
Making puppy noises.
Telling everyone good night, waving wildly.
Cuddling his blankie.  And lovingly curling up in a ball pretending he actually likes to sleep.

Renn Loves:
Cheerios
My vegetable soup
The dog and cat.  Particularly the hateful cat.
Outside
Water
Mud.  Lots of mud.
Pulling everything out of cupboards/bins/boxes, etc.
Communicating his wants!
His puppy book.
Holding the calculator or TV remote up to his ear and talking on the phone.
Trucks.  There are trucks all over my house.  Ninja turtle trucks, pink barbie trucks, monster trucks, hot wheels, cement trucks.  We could start a kiddie dealership.
Destroying whatever Elise is doing.
His slide.  He can climb up and go down on his own.  A climber...

2016

We partied, a balloon with an activity for every half an hour counting down from 3:30-9:00 we celebrate with the east coast.

Renn even stayed up until 6:30!
I know, I know the worst picture of me ever but the alternative made me look (how is it even possible) worse, like maybe that wasn't just martinelli's in those cups.

The gingerbread house in all it's hot glued, rock hard  glory, about to be used for target practice.

Happy New Year!

Goals:
Renn-learn to walk
Elise-learn her letters and sounds
Jack-pass off 2 piano books
Jara-work on spelling
Jed-landscape the backyard FOR REAL
Joshlyn-start exercising again
Jed and Joshlyn-take a vacation
Everyone (except Renn)-make beds everyday

We are 1.5 months in and Elise is winning...

Standards

The blog is going to be suffering.  Even more greatly.  As typical, I procrastinated my day of reckoning with the Nevada Department of Education and now I pay the price.  My teaching license, that I worked very hard to achieve, is set to expire this summer.  I've been aware of this fact for 4.5 years, do you think that led me towards my goals of re-certification even a year ago.  Nay.  Of course I had a newborn and was pregnant in 2014-15 which renders me perfectly lackadaisical.  Growing a human is hard work.  Keeping a baby alive is even harder work. Even as we speak I should be reading and digesting the disastrous mess that is common core but I'm incapable of reading 5 syllable words at the moment.   My eyes are crossing trying to comprehend...

It is recommended that quantitative measures be used to locate a text within a grade band because they measure dimensions of text complexity—such as word frequency, sentence length, and text cohesion (to name just three)—that are difficult for a human reader to evaluate when examining a text.

Six credits in two and a half months.  That is where I have placed myself.  Therefore, if you see me muttering you will understand.  Well, muttering more than usual.  Come to think of it, if you see me you should be amazed.  My free moments are wed to the computer and as you can see I utilize them very wisely.  That being said, I must return now to Understanding and Implementing Common Core Standards, my brain having been switched to normal mode through this therapeutic rant.  I can now stop thinking backwards and gacking through the future of America's education.  Should you be interested in "preparing America's student through success" I suggest you follow the provided link.  http://www.corestandards.org/ Together we can achieve the core!

Gingerly

Gingerbread houses. The one thing the Grinch liked least of all.
Notes about this year:
1.  It was late and we were tired and it was a Friday.  The perfect storm.
2.  They had been driving me crazy about it all week.  All week.
3.  We are wearing our pajamas because it was time to go to bed.
4.  Jed is strong.
5.  My kids have sugar problems
Now on to the story...
So I accidentally bought the house that wasn't pre-assembled, this normally saves me a lot of cussing and bad feelings.   I was dutifully royal icing away when I ran into a little problem, the roof kept sliding off.  Jed is called in to hold things into place while I frost.  Jed picks up the house in his giant paws and applies pressure crushing the ginger shack into bits and pieces.  Time freezes.  All eyes widen and mouths drop.  All eyes turn to me.  I have one moment to decide what to do.  I stop, pause, put a hand to my face and...laugh.  Normal laugh not the scary, cynical, death laugh.  The look on Jed's face of sheer fright was enough to put me into fits of laughter.  Out comes the glue gun and away we go, we don't eat the damn thing anyway.  Well I don't.  Besides hot glue is probably better for your teeth than hardened, royal icing anyway.

What consuming copious amounts of sugar will do to little people late at night.
God rest ye merry gentlemen.

The Nutcracker

The girls and I decided to join our friends and watch the Nutcracker this year.  I hadn't been since Jara was three.  The show was staged at the Smith Center in Las Vegas and it is a beautiful venue.  A little spot of culture for sin city.  Jara was excited to go and I wasn't worried a bit about her, however, we decided to take Elise and I was sore afraid.  Needless worrying, she was an angel, the threat of the usher was enough to quiet her into submission, that and the distraction of sparkling, beautiful dancers.  The show was amazing, hello-a real canon, but the best was looking over at my girlies faces and seeing the sheer wonder and delight.

Elise and my "grandchild" Diamond, I love it when Elise calls me grandma in public. You may not be able to tell but Elise and Diamond had matching dresses.

Jara and her friend Abby.
I love that my friend Annie and I have daughters we've raised together from the cradle.  Couldn't have planned it better.

My little ballerina.  During intermission she danced all the way to the bathroom.

Golden sisters

Posing with friends and Clara.  Clara was a good sport and made the girls' day by visiting with them after the show.

December Traditions

This year we started a new tradition.  I bought a little kit of wooden ornaments that comes with a nightly thought and scripture, it is called the 25 days of Christ.  We painted/created the ornaments and then talked about them most nights. It was a very calming, special way to celebrate each day.

Here are the ornaments.  My good friend Mandi gifted me a tree to go along with them.  The kids helped paint them and I would say they did a pretty good job.  Jed manned the glue gun.  I only broke one ornament in the process.

A man tradition.  Jed and his buddies: Ty, Mike and Ty's bro, Trent,  out for a ride.  They still got it.  One of the young men Jed was formerly in charge of told me he won't ride with them because they are crazy and too fast.

12 days of Christmas tradition, this year I got together with my young women group of 14/15-year-old's and this is what we came up with for "our widows."  I thought up 12 rhymes for Christmas time (example) for each tag.  By the end of the day I sounded like a cracked Dr. Suess book.

Reading letters from Santa.  Our cursed elf Bongo is good at letter duty.

And so are these little elves, I make them lick and seal the annual Christmas card.  Not a job I'm too sad to relinquish.

And here are just one of the many treats that were made/consumed that resulted in me using an entire four pack box of butter, that's right 16 sticks of glory, from Costco.
 I'm repenting now.
I shouldn't have put almond flavoring in the frosting.
Jara's class almost didn't have cupcakes for their party.
